In most use cases involving flash storage deployments, the business environment changes, driving a need for higher-performance storage. However, the case of Epic Systems Corporation software is the opposite—the storage requirements haven’t changed recently, but the options for addressing them have. Epic, a privately-held company founded in 1979 and based in Verona,Wisconsin, makes applications for medical groups, hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Epic software typically exhibits high frequency, random storage accesses with stringent latency requirements. IBM has been working with Epic to develop host-side and storage-side solutions to meet these requirements. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the combination of IBM® POWER8™ servers and IBM FlashSystem™ storage more than meets the performance levels Epic recommends for the backend storage supporting its software implementations—at a cost point multiple times lower than other storage alternatives.

Secure, efficient communication between doctors and staff is key to reliable patient care. For Groves Community Hospice, every situation involving patients requires rapid response; this poses a particular challenge, as more than 80 percent of the hospice staff work in the field. With so many doctors and staff off-site or on-call, and considering the inherent urgency of hospice care, Groves needed to streamline staff communications and enable a better way for physicians and staff to connect and discuss critical patient issues within a secure environment.

Somerset Orthopedic Associates (SOA) has always been on the cutting edge of medicine. In fact, SOA opened the first orthopedic-specific ambulatory surgical center (ASC) in the state of New Jersey in 1997. However, like many medical groups, SOA came to realize that when it came to practice management (PM) software, it had been holding onto an outdated system for too long. Although the seven-surgeon group was growing, so too were the frustrations and costs associated with its client-server system, not to mention concerns about keeping up with industry change. Determined to make the group more nimble, SOA’s Administrator of over 16 years, Alexandra Archibald, set out in search of a new PM-EHR solution.
