According to recent ESG research, 70% of IT respondents indicated they plan to invest in HCI over the next 24 months. IT planners are increasingly turning toward HyperConverged Infrastructure (HCI) solutions to simplify and speed up infrastructure deployments, ease day-to-day operational management, reduce costs, and increase IT speed and agility. HCI consists of a nodal-based architecture whereby all the required virtualized compute, storage, and networking assets are self-contained inside individual nodes. These nodes are, in effect, discrete virtualized computing resources “in a box.” However, they are typically grouped together to provide resiliency, high performance, and flexible resource pooling. And since HCI appliances can scale out to large configurations over time, these systems can provide businesses with investment protection and a simpler, more agile, and cost-effective way to deploy virtualized computing infrastructure. Big data can be observed, in a real sense, by computers processing it and often by humans reviewing visualizations created from it. In the past, humans had to reduce the data, often using techniques of statistical sampling, to be able to make sense of it. Now, new big data processing techniques will help us make sense of it without traditional reduction.

This assessment is composed of a core set of comparative questions, and the option to be assessed in any of three key areas: computing economics, service delivery and business performance. After a half-decade of cost cutting and shrinking IT budgets, the compute infrastructure that powers the enterprise now is typically inefficient, slow and not optimized for business outcomes. It is better suited to the economic realities of 2010 rather than the rigors of the application workloads, delivery models & business expectations of today driven by cloud, mobility, security and big data megatrends. As a result, there is a significant gap between what businesses expect from technology and what IT can deliver.

In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world

From stolen consumer data to sensitive data leaks, it seems that no one’s data has been safe in recent years. For numerous reasons, like misconfigured storage repositories and unpatched vulnerabilities, this trend is likely to continue. The integration of digital technology into all areas of business has resulted in more of our data being stored on computers and websites targeted by hackers, which has significantly increased the number of data breaches as well as organizations’ vulnerability to malware attacks. For example, the Equifax breach impacted 145 MM consumers, and with more employees working remotely on a wide range of devices, the threat landscape has expanded. The meteoric rise of the public cloud has compounded this issue, as data security requires new knowledge and skill sets in short supply, often leading to misconfigured and insecure solutions. Companies need to adopt the approach that every piece of data in their possession, on-premises or in the cloud, must be encryp

ESG recently conducted a quantitative research study to assess companies’ IT Transformation maturity. ESG found that operating a modern server environment, defined as an environment in which operations tasks are more automated than manual, led to a perception of cost parity with the public cloud. Nearly half felt their cost of compute was highly competitive with CSPs and another 48% felt it was generally comparable. This compares favorably to the 19% and 47% respectively among organizations running a legacy server environment. Download this solution brief from Dell EMC and Intel® to learn more.

Today, everything computes. Intelligence has been infused into things no one would recognize as computers: appliances, cars, roadways, clothes, even rivers and cornfields. Tomorrow, many of these things will think, thanks to breakthroughs in cognitive computing. Even the things that don’t think themselves will continue collecting and reporting the massive quantities of data that feed cognitive systems.

IT as a Service is the emerging technique that gives technology leaders the flexibility of providing the right set of services to the business. The world of IT is changing dramatically. Businesses are increasingly discovering that IT services are becoming the foundation for the customer experience. IT as a Service isn’t simply a new delivery model for applications. Instead, IT as a Service is a new approach to providing an array of modular services that are targeted to solve changing business problems. While services can be as straightforward as compute or storage in the cloud, they can also be used to complex solutions. Other services may include microservices or integration services that enable a business to quickly create new solutions to help service customers in a more creative and efficient manner.

Ransomware has taken the world by storm. CryptoWall extorted an estimated $18 million, and WannaCry locked up more than 230,000 computers across the globe in 2017. Companies of all sizes are sitting up and taking notice. Even brands with a strong security investment have fallen victim. We’ve seen ransomware cripple businesses: nearly 19% of businesses stop operations immediately after discovering a ransomware attack.1 Hospital emergency rooms forced to turn people away; global shipping logistics experience massive disruption; and even a summer blockbuster movie held up for ransom. The FBI estimates ransomware is now a billion-dollar business. Ransomware has been around for a while, and it has spiked in recent years. It secured 5th place as the most common variety of malware in 2017, up from 22nd place in 2014.2 Originally ransomware targeted individuals and was considered a consumer nuisance. It has now become a business menace.

This is arguably the most unsettling time in history to be a CIO. The IT landscape is shifting at a rapid pace with advances in social media, mobility and big data. The proliferation of advanced robotics is just around the corner and the Internet of Things is connecting even the most mundane objects to the internet—and probably the corporate network. Back in the 1990s, most computer hackers were interested in gaining access to networks purely for kudos among their peers. Today hackers have monetized their skills and make their living from finding vulnerabilities in IT networks.
