And then imagine processing power strong enough to make sense of all this data in every language and in every dimension. Unless you’ve achieved that digital data nirvana (and you haven’t told the rest of us), you’re going to have some unknowns in your world. In the world of security, unknown threats exist outside the enterprise in the form of malicious actors, state-sponsored attacks and malware that moves fast and destroys everything it touches. The unknown exists inside the enterprise in the form of insider threat from rogue employees or careless contractors – which was deemed by 24% of our survey respondents to pose the most serious risk to their organizations. The unknown exists in the form of new devices, new cloud applications, and new data. The unknown is what keeps CISOs, what keeps you, up at night – and we know because we asked you.

When it comes to the threat landscape, it’s important to take a look in the rearview mirror once in a while. As with driving, not only do you get a good look at what’s behind you, but you can often spot what’s coming up quick, set to overtake you. That’s the spirit of this threat report. We’ve picked out five key stories from the last year or so, not just because they were big events, but because we think these threats, or similar ones, could very well appear in the near future. Take modular threats like Emotet and VPNFilter, for example. These are threats that can deliver an on-demand menu of attacks and threats, depending on which device is infected or the intended goal of the attacker. We saw plenty of such modular threats in recent history, and wouldn’t be surprised if we see more in the future. Email remains the darling delivery method of attackers, with threats from cryptomining to Emotet using it to spread. It’s also highly likely that other threats, such as unauthorized M

Because electricity is a key commodity for business it represents significant financial risk. Yet many power management systems remain isolated and separate from the rest of the business enterprise. The result is poor access to incomplete information, with only limited knowledge of risk exposure. An integrated, comprehensive power management system that includes metering, software, and power quality mitigation equipment offers the most holistic, systems-based approach to managing this risk exposure.

Consumers search for online reviews for reassurance and greater confidence in their buying decision. As 59% of consumers believe online reviews are just as trustworthy as their friends1, they may well be more influential than you think. Embracing and encouraging customer reviews can seem a little daunting, especially with the prospect of attracting negative reviews. But it doesn’t need to be. Not least because more consumers take the time to write positive reviews (49%) than negative (34%)1, but because when managed effectively, negative reviews can make a positive impact on your online reputation, and ultimately your sales. There are of course other factors that can make review management tricky, including a large number of locations, the consistency and timing of the message and a lack of education across the business, to name but a few. This guide is here is to tackle all these challenges and give you practical tools and steps that you can implement straight away, to encourage m

For decades, organizations relied on traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) to organize, store, and analyze their data. But then Facebook came along, and an RDBMS was suddenly not quite enough. The social giant needed a powerful database solution for its Inbox Search feature, and Apache Cassandra—a distributed NoSQL database—was born. Released as an open source project in July 2008, Cassandra—named after the mythological prophet who famously put a curse on an oracle—became an Apache Incubator project in March 2009. It graduated to a top-level project in February 2010

We live in the age of “multi”. Everything is becoming more complex, more “intelligent”, and more distributed. Hybrid cloud isn’t really the new frontier—some companies have been operating in a hybrid cloud environment for nearly a decade—the new frontier is learning HOW to take full advantage of hybrid cloud without creating data silos or busting the IT budget. Enterprises are, of course, always looking for ways to make their computer systems faster, more highly available, more fault tolerant, and simpler to scale. But in the age of “multi,” this is becoming harder and harder to do. Imagine running a social network with millions of U.S.-based users and millions of European users. You could host all your servers and data in the United States, but then all of your European users would have a slower experience using your application than their U.S.-based counterparts. You could host all your servers and data in Europe, but then the U.S.-based users would have a slower experience. An obvio

IBM Cloud Private for Data is an integrated data science, data engineering and app building platform built on top of IBM Cloud Private (ICP). The latter is intended to a) provide all the benefits of cloud computing but inside your firewall and b) provide a stepping-stone, should you want one, to broader (public) cloud deployments. Further, ICP has a micro-services architecture, which has additional benefits, which we will discuss. Going beyond this, ICP for Data itself is intended to provide an environment that will make it easier to implement datadriven processes and operations and, more particularly, to support both the development of AI and machine learning capabilities, and their deployment. This last point is important because there can easily be a disconnect Executive summary between data scientists (who often work for business departments) and the people (usually IT) who need to operationalise the work of those data scientists

As artificial intelligence, automation, Internet of Things, blockchain and 5G become pervasive, their combined impact will reshape standard business architectures. The “outside-in” digital transformation of the past decade is giving way to the “inside-out” potential of data exploited with these exponential technologies. We call this next-generation business model the Cognitive Enterprise.

The increase in sophisticated, targeted security threats by both external attackers and malicious insiders have made it extremely difficult for organizations to properly protect critical and sensitive information. The task of protecting these assets has only grown harder as IT environments have become more complex and widely distributed across geographic locations and in the cloud. Many recent high-profile breaches have one thing in common: They were accomplished through the compromise of passwords. In many cases, end-user passwords are initially hacked through various social engineering techniques. Then permissions are escalated to gain access to more privileged accounts — the keys to the kingdom. This unauthorized access can easily go undetected for weeks or even months, allowing hackers to see and steal information at their convenience. Unfortunately, many IT users lack a full understanding of how privileged accounts function, as well as the risks associated with their compromise an

Some highlights include: Why data science should not be treated like engineering. How to go beyond simple infrastructure allocation and give data science teams capabilities to manage their workflows and model lifecycle. Why agility and special hardware to support burst computing are so important to data science break

And yet the question of whether to build or buy still remains. This paper presents a framework to facilitate the decision process, and considers the four-year projection of total costs for both approaches in a sample scenario. Read this whitepaper to understand three major factors in your decision process: Total cost of ownership - Internal build costs often run into the tens of millions Opportunity costs - Distraction from your core competency Risk factors - Missed deadlines and delayed time to market

For a company that sells wool products, the dog days of summer can be tough. Despite this challenge, Pendleton has managed to stay relevant even during the hottest days of the year thanks to Bluecore. “In June and July, having Bluecore send people emails based on what they browsed is especially helpful because we don’t have as many messages or new products going out. So as often as people come to our site is as often as they’ll get emails, and those emails are guaranteed to be relevant to them. If the onus was on blast emails, then we’d be showing people products that are not necessarily relevant to them or that they might think are terribly out of season,”
