The purpose of IT backup and recovery systems is to avoid data loss and recover quickly, thereby minimizing downtime costs. Traditional storage-centric data protection architectures such as Purpose Built Backup Appliances (PBBAs), and the conventional backup and restore processing supporting them, are prone to failure on recovery. This is because the processes, both automated and manual, are too numerous, too complex, and too difficult to test adequately. In turn this leads to unacceptable levels of failure for today’s mission critical applications, and a poor foundation for digital transformation initiatives. Governments are taking notice. Heightened regulatory compliance requirements have implications for data recovery processes and are an unwelcome but timely catalyst for companies to get their recovery houses in order. Onerous malware, such as ransomware and other cyber attacks increase the imperative for organizations to have highly granular recovery mechanisms in place that allow

Business leaders expect two things from IT: keep mission-critical applications available and high performing 24x7 and, if something does happen, recover to be back in business quickly and without losing any critical data so there is no impact on revenue stream. Of course, there is a gap between this de facto expectation from nontechnical business leaders and what current technology is actually capable of delivering. For mission-critical workloads, which are most often hosted on databases, organizations may choose to implement high availability (HA) technologies within the database to avoid downtime and data loss.

It’s the moment every IT department dreads: A data loss event takes your business offline and the countdown clock begins. Despite spending countless hours safeguarding against and preparing for this moment, the impact of downtime is immediate and all-consuming. While IT pros can’t always avoid data loss events, they can prepare for them to ensure minimal downtime. To better understand the IT experience during a data disaster, EVault commissioned Spiceworks Voice of IT to survey IT pros regarding disaster recovery practices and perceptions. All survey respondents were based in the U.S. and have influence over backup/disaster recovery purchase decisions. This e-book will explore the impact of downtime and data loss on IT departments for small and midsize businesses.

In this digital world, fast and reliable movement of digital data, including massive sizes over global distances, is becoming vital to business success across virtually every industry. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) that has traditionally been the engine of this data movement, however, has inherent bottlenecks in performance (Figure 1), especially for networks with high, round-trip time (RTT) and packet loss, and most pronounced on high-bandwidth networks. It is well understood that these inherent “soft” bottlenecks arcaused by TCP’s AdditiveIncrease-Multiplicative-Decrease (AIMD) congestion avoidance algorithm, which slowly probes the available bandwidth of the network, increasing the transmission rate until packet loss is detected and then exponentially reducing the transmission rate. However, it is less understood that other sources of packet loss, such as losses due to the physical network media, not associated with network congestion equally reduce the transmission rate.

Having 100% accurate network visibility is a looming requirement for avoiding substantial financial losses. Why? And how can you get it? You can’t manage and protect what you can’t see. But while many hundreds of network monitoring tools exist, organizations today know surprisingly little about the traffic on their mission-critical, high-speed networks. It takes them so long to fix network problems that the business suffers while the seconds, minutes, and hours of downtime accumulate. Download this Whitepaper for more information.

How Does Toyota Keep 6,000 Delinquent Customers In Their Cars While Avoiding Millions of Dollars a year in Losses? For auto lenders such as Toyota Financial Services (TFS), striking the right balance between growth and risk means making profitable lending decisions. TDS was challenged with trying to balance growth and risk within its lending business and the decisions it previously made created an unacceptably high amount of delinquencies and repossessions for its customers.

System reliability is a vital component in Storage Area Network (SAN) design that keeps your production environment operating and avoids data loss and downtime. But since SANs are built using both mechanical and electronic parts, component failures due to usage, environmental factors, or manufacturing defects are not uncommon. Even in completely redundant systems, controllers can fail, fans can stop operating, power supplies can burn out, and disk drives can degrade or fail.

With data breaches widespread, no organisation can afford to be complacent, but most data losses are avoidable. Many of the breaches making headline news are caused by the loss or theft of laptops and other portable devices. To protect themselves from financial and reputational damage, encryption technologies can reduce risks by ensuring the information on such devices is secure when users are on the move. They can also add value by allowing the secure sharing of information among authorised users and by enabling more secure remote working.
